The group stage is the foundation of World Cup 2026 — 72 matches across all 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico, running from the June 11 opener at the Estadio Azteca to the final round of fixtures on June 27. For the first time the tournament fields 48 teams in 12 groups of four, so every nation plays three group games, and the venues range from the altitude of Mexico City and Guadalajara to the roofed arenas of Houston, Dallas and Vancouver.
Finishing in the top two of a group guarantees a place in the new Round of 32; the eight best third-placed teams join them, which keeps far more nations alive into the final matchday than ever before.
